Starting a Box Truck Business: Costs, Rates and Profit

A box truck is the cheapest way into for-hire trucking: no CDL for most 26 ft trucks, no IFTA or IRP, and a lower truck price. But insurance, low rates and empty miles catch a lot of new owners out. Here's what it really costs.

Startup cost checklist

ItemLowHigh
Used 26 ft box truck (cash or down payment)$5,000 down$60,000 cash
USDOT number$0$0
MC operating authority (interstate for-hire)$300$300
BOC-3 process agent filing$25$100
UCR (smallest bracket)Under $100Under $100
Insurance down payment (liability + cargo)$2,000$6,000
Business setup (LLC, EIN, bank account)$100$800
ELD, phone, load board$300$1,000
Equipment (straps, dolly, pads, liftgate repairs)$300$2,000
Working capital (2–3 months)$8,000$20,000

Costs are typical ranges; the $300 FMCSA authority fee is set by FMCSA. Insurance varies most of all, by state, driver record and cargo. For a semi, see what it costs to start a trucking company.

Rules that apply (and don't) to box trucks

  • No CDL if the truck's GVWR is 26,000 lbs or less and you don't haul placarded hazmat.
  • No IFTA or IRP for trucks under 26,001 lbs with two axles. No Form 2290 heavy vehicle use tax (that starts at 55,000 lbs).
  • USDOT number for interstate commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs.
  • MC authority, BOC-3 and UCR for interstate for-hire carriers.
  • DOT medical card, hours of service and ELD apply to interstate trucks over 10,000 lbs, unless you qualify for the short-haul exception.
  • Insurance minimums: $750,000 liability for general freight in trucks over 10,000 lbs; many brokers want $1 million plus cargo coverage.

How box truck loads pay

Box truck freight pays less per load than semi freight because each load is smaller. The common types:

  • Load-board freight: priced per mile or per load, varying a lot by lane and urgency.
  • Expedited: time-critical freight that pays more, especially for teams and nights.
  • Final-mile and local delivery: paid per stop, per hour or per day, often with liftgate and inside-delivery charges.
  • Dedicated contracts: steady routes for one shipper at an agreed weekly rate.

Whatever the freight, compare the offer to your own break-even. Box trucks get about 8–12 mpg, and with diesel above $6 a gallon in late 2026, fuel alone can be 50–75¢ a mile.

Price every load from your break-even

Break-even per loaded mile = (monthly fixed costs + your pay
+ running cost per mile × all miles) ÷ loaded miles
Ask for = break-even + your profit per mile

The box truck rate calculator does this for you and checks any offer against it. Count deadhead: box truck loads are often one-way, and the drive home can wipe out the profit.

What sinks new box truck businesses

  1. Insurance costs higher than planned, especially in the first year of authority.
  2. Taking cheap loads without counting deadhead.
  3. Paying a dispatcher a percentage of thin loads. See the dispatch fee calculator.
  4. No cash buffer for repairs and slow-paying brokers. Factoring helps, but costs money.
  5. Not billing extras such as liftgate, detention and extra stops. See accessorial charges.

Common questions

How much does it cost to start a box truck business?

Usually about $15,000 to $40,000 with a used truck financed or bought cheaply, covering authority, insurance down payment, setup and 2–3 months of working capital. Buying a truck for cash adds more.

Do I need a CDL for a 26 ft box truck?

Not if the truck's gross vehicle weight rating is 26,000 lbs or less and you don't haul placarded hazmat. Many 26 ft box trucks are rated just under that limit.

Do box trucks need IFTA?

No, if the truck has two axles and weighs 26,000 lbs or less. IFTA applies to vehicles over 26,000 lbs or with three or more axles.

What is a good box truck rate per mile?

One that clears your break-even plus a profit margin. With 2026 fuel and insurance costs, many owner-operators need roughly $2.00 to $2.60 a loaded mile on a 26 ft truck; work out your own with the box truck rate calculator.
