How the box truck rate is calculated

Fixed per month = truck payment + insurance + other fixed + your pay
Running per mile = fuel price ÷ mpg + maintenance and tires
Loaded miles = miles per month × (1 − deadhead share)
Break-even rate = (fixed + running per mile × all miles) ÷ loaded miles
Target rate = break-even + profit target

With the example figures, a 26 ft box truck running 8,000 miles a month at 10 mpg and $6.29 diesel costs about $1.77 a mile (counting the owner's $5,000 pay) and needs about $2.21 a loaded mile to break even once 20% deadhead is counted. With a 30¢ profit target, ask for about $2.51.

What box truck loads pay

Box truck freight pays less per mile than semi freight because each load is smaller. Many loads are local and paid by the hour, the stop or the day. Longer load-board freight is usually quoted by the mile and varies widely by lane and urgency. Expedited and team freight pays the most. Always compare the offer against your own break-even, not someone else's average.

Ways to raise your rate

  • Count deadhead. A $2.40 offer with 100 empty miles on a 300-mile load is really $1.80 a mile driven.
  • Bill accessorials such as liftgate use, inside delivery, detention and extra stops.
  • Build direct shipper customers. Local businesses often pay more than load boards for reliable service.
  • Keep the truck under 26,001 lbs GVWR if you can. That avoids IFTA, IRP and CDL requirements. See starting a box truck business.

Common questions

How much should a box truck charge per mile?

At least your break-even rate per loaded mile plus a profit margin. With $6 diesel in 2026 that is often somewhere around $2.00 to $2.60 a loaded mile for a 26 ft truck once you pay yourself, but your insurance, payment, miles and deadhead change it.

How many miles per gallon does a 26 ft box truck get?

Usually about 8 to 12 mpg depending on the engine, load and driving. Use your own fuel records when you have them.

Is a box truck business profitable?

It can be, if your rates cover your full cost per mile including your own pay, and you keep deadhead low. Insurance and the truck payment are the costs that sink most new box truck businesses.
